BETSY LAYNE – As a junior, Andrew Roberts helped to lead the Betsy Layne Bobcats to the All “A” Classic statewide title. Now, as a senior, Roberts is listed as the top player in the 15th Region All “A” Classic. He will look to lead the Bobcats to another regional title. Betsy Layne, however, doesn’t occupy the top spot in the 15th Region All “A” Classic team rankings. Allen Central, Magoffin County, Paintsville, Phelps, Piarist School,. Pikeville, Prestonsburg, Shelby Valley and South Floyd join Betsy Layne to make up the field for the latest 15th Region All ‘A’ Classic boys’ basketball tournament. Magoffin County is a newcomer to the field, which is now minus Sheldon Clark.
In the team standings, defending 15th Region champion Shelby Valley is ranked first, one spot ahead of Betsy Layne (2). The remainder of the team poll features Pikeville (3), Prestonsburg (4) and Paintsville (5).
As a junior, Roberts averaged 8.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game for the Bobcats. Through the first seven games of his senior season, Roberts is averaging 11.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.
Pikeville guard guard Ethan Rowe is ranked second behind Roberts in the 15th Region All “A” Classic player rankings. Paintsville junior guard Trevor Tiler (3), Shelby Valley sophomore center Cody Belter (4) and South Floyd senior guard Brandon Marson (5) round out the 15th Region All “A” Classic player rankings.
The 15th Region All “A” Classic will be tip off on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the East Kentucky Expo Center in downtown Pikeville.
