WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Postal Service announced a plan Tuesday that would close 10 percent of post offices nationwide, including 10 in Floyd County.

The plan is not final, but if approved would include the Bevinsville, Blue River, David, Dwale, Hueysville, Lackey, Minnie, Teaberry, Tram and Weeksbury post offices, in Floyd County.

The move was announced as part of a cost-savings measure for the financially-troubled postal service.

There is still some time before a final decision is made on the closings. Once a post office is targeted for closure, people served by that office have 60 days to file comments with the postal service. If, after that time, a decision is made to close an office, customers of that office are also given a chance to appeal the decision to the Postal Regulatory Commission.

Once the offices are closed, some of them could be replaced by "village offices," which offer postal services from within local stores, libraries or government offices.
