WAYLAND - A Wayland man is dead after attempting to flee police on an all-terrain vehicle early Wednesday morning.

According to Kentucky State Police, Douglas Allen, 34, was driving a 2007 Yamaha ATV in the road shortly before 1 a.m. when he encountered a traffic checkpoint manned by officers with KSP and Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement.

Police say Allen attempted to avoid the roadblock by turning onto Mill Branch Road, at which point officers gave chase. However, after traveling a short distance, Allen's ATV overturned as he attempted to cross some railroad tracks.

Rescue workers responded to the scene of the accident, but Allen was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Onda Hunt.

Allen was not wearing a helmet.

KSP Sgt. Todd Kidd continues to investigate the incident.
