Friday night is a night Sheldon Clark High School football fans won't soon forget. Then again, Belfry High School football fans probably won't forget Friday night anytime soon, either. Both for the wrong seasons. Sheldon Clark, playing at home dealt Belfry a loss in overtime, beating the Pirates 35-29 in overtime. The Cardinals found themselves behind three touchdowns midway through the third quarter before battling back and beating the Pirates. Sheldon Clark scored 28 unanswered points on its way to the win.

Belfry packed an 8-7 lead into halftime before adding three quick scores in the third quarter.

Belfry, Sheldon Clark and Prestonsburg all have one loss in Class 2A, District 8 play. Earlier in the season, Prestonsburg, in a home game, defeated Sheldon Clark 20-17 in overtime in September.

Senior running back Adam Dials led the way for Sheldon Clark as the Cardinals scored the upset win over longtime rival Belfry. The Sheldon Clark defense held Belfry junior running back Dustin May out of the end zone late. Belfry went scoreless in the last quarter and a half of regulation.

May, Corey Chapman and Gerald Epling each rushed for 100 yards as the Pirates fell short.

“That just goes to show how competitive this district is.” Prestonsburg Coach John DeRossett commented. “That's a great win for Coach (Shawn) Hager and the Sheldon Clark football program.”

Sheldon Clark Coach Shawn Hager recorded his first win over Belfry, his high school alma mater. The win brought to an end Belfry's 30-game win streak over district opponents.

This week, Belfry, Sheldon Clark and Prestonsburg are all due back in action. The Blackcats (4-4 overall, 3-1 in the district) will hit the road Friday and travel to Shelby Valley for a game against the host Wildcats. Shelby Valley appears in the driver's seat for the fourth seed in Class 2A, District 8.

The Blackcats will travel back to Pike County in Week 10 for a regular season-ending game against host East Ridge.

Sheldon Clark (7-1 overall, 3-1 in the district) will be on the road Friday at Pike County Central. Belfry (7-2 overall, 4-1 in the district) has this week as its open date. The Pirates will conclude regular-season play next Friday night at home against Floyd County rival Shelby Valley.

In the final week of the regular-season, Sheldon Clark will host Magoffin County.
