LEXINGTON - The Allen Central High School volleyball team traveled to Lexington Sunday and attended the University of Kentucky's home match against visiting University of South Carolina. ACHS Coach Larry Maynard recently received an invitation from the UK volleyball program to have his squad take in a match. Maynard thought Sunday's Southeastern Conference (SEC) match would one his team would enjoy. “Our girls had a great time as UK beat South Carolina 3-0,” Maynard commented. “It was a good trip for everyone.” Kentucky also enjoyed the home match. The host Wildcats rolled to the 3-0 victory, winning rather easily over the Gamecocks. Wildcat outside hitter Melissa Popp had 14 kills and was named UK's Star of the Game. The match was televised live on SEC TV. The Wildcats used a commanding blocking attack in the 3-0 (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) win over South Carolina in Memorial Coliseum. The Wildcats improved to 11-5 overall and 4-4 in Southeastern Conference play with their fifth consecutive victory over the Gamecocks. South Carolina dropped to 10-9 overall and 3-5 in league play. Allen Central was in action Tuesday evening at Raider Arena against Betsy Layne in the opening round of the 55th District Tournament. Results from the opening round of the district volleyball tournament were unavailable at press time.
