PRESTONSBURG - Prestonsburg High School Coach John DeRossett has announced plans to honor the 2001 PHS football team when the Blackcats host Sheldon Clark Friday night in a key Class 2A, District Eight game.

All members of the 2001 PHS football team will receive a gift and serve as honorary captains of Friday night's home game.

Prestonsburg claimed both district and regional honors in the 2001 season. The Blackcats defeated bitter rival Belfry 34-14 in the regional championship game and topped Mason County 18-13 on the road in the State Semifinals.

The 2001 edition of the Blackcat football team finished 13-2, falling to Bardstown in the Class 2A state championship game.

“We wanted to take this chance to honor the 2001 team,” said DeRossett, who guided the Blackcats to the 2001 Class 2A State Finals. “We'd like to invite all members of the ‘01 team back for Friday night's game.”

Kickoff for Friday night's Prestonsburg-Sheldon Clark district battle is set for 7:30 p.m.
