The presentation of colors and the National Anthem were first to begin the day. Special recognition was then given to several county schools in regards to high attendance, grant approvals and achievements in technology. Supt. Dr. Paul Fanning reported the largest amount of scholarships given to high school students this year, amounting to about $4 million.
"Parents give us their children and their money," Fanning said. "We have to take care of both of them." He also said that parents play a big role in their children's lives and teachers do too.
The overall atmosphere at opening day was upbeat and optimistic. Fanning said that professional development shows that the school system is moving forward and he wished everyone good luck for the upcoming year.
The speaker for the day, Gary Griesser, put a lot of humor into the meeting. His unorthodox way of grabbing the attention of his audience proved to be successful, for at times he almost had the entire crowd rolling out of their seats.
"Laughter is the lubricant of life," Griesser said.
It turns out Gary Griesser is also somewhat of a singer. He sang "God Bless America" along with other patriotic songs and said it is very important to appreciate what so many sacrifice in order for others to have freedom.
"I believe there is still reason for the future of hope in America," Griesser said.
Griesser continued his presentation titled, "Even Eagles Need a Push," up until the scheduled morning break. Activities planned for the rest of the day included visitation of vendor tables and individual school presentations.
