Blackcats topple David

BUCKLEYS CREEK - In the seventh-place game of the Coca-Cola Hoops Classic at Pike County Central High School Saturday, Prestonsburg grabbed an early lead and never relinquished it against Floyd County foe David School. The Blackcats led 22-5 at halftime en route to a 73-15 win over the young Comets.

Tyler Mullins, a transfer from Pike County Central, led Prestonsburg in scoring with a game-high 14 points. Lewis Barnett added 13 points for the Blackcats. Bobby Hughes, a promising sophomore, tossed in 11 points for the Blackcats, giving Prestonsburg three players in double figures.

Ten different Prestonsburg players posted points in the tournament win. Michael Hernandez pushed in nine points and Nathaniel Stephens added eight for Prestonsburg

David, in its first season of competition in the KHSAA, got seven points from Joe Tiller.

Prestonsburg began the tournament with a loss to Letcher County Central. The Blackcats dropped a second tournament game to 16th Region contender Morgan County, falling in double overtime.

In the fifth-place game of the Pike Central tournament, Morgan County topped Breathitt County, 63-34. Belfry claimed third-place, downing rival Pikeville convincingly, 71-43.

Jamie Case paced Belfry in the win over Pikeville, scoring 19 points. Matt Maynard also helped the Pirate cause, tossing in 13 points.

Tim Honaker had 18 points for the Panthers.
