PIKEVILLE – A plane crashed Wednesday along Kelsey Friend Boulevard in Pikeville, as it was approaching the Pikeville/Pike County Airport resulting in the death of two people.

Police identified the two victims late Thursday afternoon as David Brent Miller, 50, of Portland, Ind., who was the pilot, and David Carlton Cowherd, 70, of Centerville, Ohio, Miller’s passenger.

The bodies had been sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Frankfort for positive identification.

According Pikeville’s Public Safety Department, at just before 1 p.m. Wednesday a twin-engine plane crashed along a gas well road just below the airport.

Doug Tackett, Pike County’s Director of Emergency Management, has said that federal investigators are continuing to determine what may have caused the crash.

No further information has been released at this time.

Darell Yoder, who works near where the crash occurred, spoke with broadcast news stations shortly after the crash Wednesday, saying the plane “came over the ridge top and hit the trees,”
