ELIZABETHTOWN - Two Floyd County legends were among those honored on Saturday night at the Historic State Theatre in downtown Elizabethtown as the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame inducted its inaugural class.
Wayland’s “King” Kelly Coleman and McDowell’s Geri Grigsby, two of the nation’s top all-time high school basketball players, took their place in the new hall of fame, which featured 16 individuals in its debut lineup.
The 2012 class also included Wes Unseld (Seneca), Jim McDaniels (Allen County), Darrell Griffith (Male), Clemette Haskins (Warren Central), Rex Chapman (Owensboro Apollo), Richie Farmer (Clay County), Coach Bobby Keith (Clay County), Coach Roy Bowling (Laurel County), Coach S. T. Roach (Lexington Dunbar), Cliff Hagan (Owensboro), Wallace “Wah Wah” Jones (Harlan), Ralph Beard (Male), Coach Ralph Carlisle (Lafayette) and Clem Haskins (Taylor County).
Both Coleman and Grigsby were present for the induction ceremony Saturday. All living inductees were in attendance.
Coleman and Grigsby each enjoyed prolific prep careers.
Coleman sored 4,263 points in his career at Wayland High School. The state’s 1956 Mr. Basketball, Coleman set state tournament records with 62 points and 29 rebounds in 1956.
Grigsby scored 4,385 points for McDowell High School during the mid-1970s. She was Miss Basketball in 1977 after averaging 49.8 points per game.
The Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame hopes to reach 100 inductees by 2018, which is the 100-year anniversary of Kentucky’s first boys’ high school basketball state tournament.
