MIDDLE CREEK — The Battle of Middle Creek gets started tonight, and organizers say this year’s reenactment will be the biggest yet.

The Friends of Middle Creek is observing the 150th anniversary of the battle with over 250 reenactors already registered for the event. As an added bonus, the Kentucky Highland Folk Festival is joining forces with the battle, holding the two-day event in the Middle Creek National Battlefield parking lot. The events run through the weekend, with no admission charge.

“All of our events are free and open to the public,” said Patrick Davis, commander of the Friends of Middle Creek. “We encourage everyone to come out, because the more people who show up, the more likely it is we’ll be back next year.”

School groups will visit the battlefield Friday, but the action gets started Friday night, with a remembrance ceremony and Sept. 11 observation at 9 p.m. That will be followed by a night fire and ghost walk on the battlefield.

On Saturday, there will be a flag ceremony at noon, with national anthems of the confederacy and the republic played by Winds of Appalachia, which will continue performing after the ceremony. Participants will reenact the Battle of Ivy Mountain at 2 p.m. That evening, at 7 p.m., there will be a barn dance on the battlefield, followed by a firing of the cannons at 9 p.m.

Church services will be observed at 10 a.m., Sunday, and then the Battle of Middle Creek will be reenacted at 1 p.m.

The Battle of Middle Creek is staged by the Friends of Middle Creek, with support from Prestonsburg Tourism, the City of Prestonsburg, Floyd County Fiscal Court and the Middle Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

A legislative perspective
For nearly 150 years now, our nation has set aside a day to remember those who paid the ultimate price to protect our freedom. It is perhaps fitting that Memorial Day, which traces its roots to the Civil War, was itself the source of conflict for so many years. It is believed to have begun in ...
