PRESTONSBURG — Local schools continue to be on alert, following “credible” threats made against the high school and students in the wake of the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Concerned parents have been calling The Times this morning, worried that a juvenile who recently made threats against the Prestonsburg High School has been released, and that as a result, Prestonsburg Police officers are set up at all of the city’s schools.

According to Prestonsburg Police Chief Mike Ormerod, there was an issue with the charges that were first placed on the juvenile, who was arrested Sunday night after an investigation determined that there was a credible threat against the school. But Ormerod says the same juvenile was arrested again Monday and detained on a similar charge, and the individual in question is currently in detention in Breathitt County.

“We decided to put an officer at each school today, ” Ormerod said. “Just as a precautionary measure. We haven’t been notified of any additional threats.”

Two juveniles at Prestonsburg High School were arrested after threats against students and the school were uncovered and deemed credible following an investigation.

Twenty 6- and 7-year-old children and six adults were killed last Friday in a school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Ormerod told Times staff that because threats of this nature are considered a form of domestic terrorism, the FBI has also been brought in to assist with the investigation.

Due to the age of the two individuals in question, names were not released by authorities.
