Over 100 people lined the streets of Prestonsburg Saturday, during the annual Autism Awareness Walk.
PRESTONSBURG — More than 100 people turned out downtown Saturday to participate in a walk aimed at bringing awareness to autism.
Community members turned out in droves last weekend to help celebrate Autism Awareness Month with an event designed to create more awareness about the disorder. Autism rates are at an all-time high now in America, with 1 in 50 children between the ages of 6 and 17 falling into the spectrum.
Saturday’s event, was sponsored in part by Mayor Jerry Fannin, the City of Prestonsburg, and Blackcat Archery, and organized by members of the East Kentucky Autism Support Group.
Children and adults were treated to hotdogs grilled up by the Prestonsburg Fire Department as well as other refreshments. There were also giveaways provided by local businesses, and inflatable attractions to delight the children. Those who participated were also able to get information on autism and local facilities which support families coping with autism spectrum disorder.
Prestonsburg is home to Highlands Center for Autism; Eastern Kentucky’s only facilty which offers Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) for the treatment of ASD. ABA is a science that uses behavioral techniques to teach children basic and complex skills.
