PRESTONSBURG — The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office now has a new set of wheels, thanks to coal severance tax money.

Sheriff John K Blackburn received his new cruiser last week. The vehicle was included in this year’s state budget as one of the county’s coal severance tax-funded projects.

Blackburn said the four-wheel-drive, 2013 Ford Police Interceptor would primarily be used to transport prisoners. He noted that anytime someone is convicted of a felony, the sheriff’s department is required to transport him or her to prisons in La Grange, for men, or Peewee Valley, for women.

Blackburn said the sheriff’s office is also kept busy with picking up Floyd County fugitives who have fled out of state. He said the sheriff’s department has made three trips to Florida, three trips to Indiana, two trips to Georgia and trips to Ohio and Michigan to pick up prisoners this year.

The sheriff said the new vehicle should fill the bill quite nicely.

“It’s a nice car,” Blackburn said. “I’m happy to have it.”

Blackburn expressed appreciation to House Speaker Greg Stumbo and Sen. Johnny Ray Turner, for making sure the allocation made it into the budget.
