Floyd County students will get an extended break, as classes have been canceled for the rest of the week. Floyd County schools were called off Wednesday, due to weather. Supt. Henry Webb announced the school system's decision to keep schools closed Thursday and Friday shortly after 6 p.m., Wednesday. In an automated phone call to parents, Webb said the closure is due to "high water, illness and the potential for bad weather." Floyd County is one of the last school systems in the region to close for an extended period. Martin, Magoffin, Johnson and Perry counties had already called off school for the week, reaching their decisions by Wednesday morning. Throughout Wednesday, more schools and school systems joined the list, including Paintsville, Our Lady of the Mountains and New Hope Christian Academy, all of which are in Johnson County. The break will be a little longer, as students will be out of class again Monday, due to the holiday for Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.
