STANVILLE — A Pike County resident was killed Tuesday in an accident on U.S.23 in Floyd County, when a Freightliner tractor-trailer slammed head-first into a Corvette.
According to Kentucky State Police, officers received a report Tuesday afternoon of a two-vehicle accident with injuries. Units responded to the scene and information obtained at the scene indicates that 62-year-old Mayfield Pennington was operating a 1977 Corvette and was attempting to enter the southbound lane of U.S. 23. Pennington lost control of his vehicle and ended up facing the wrong direction in the right southbound lane.
Edward Carter was operating the Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling south on U.S. 23 which struck Pennington’s vehicle. Pennington was pronounced dead at the scene by Floyd County Deputy Coroner Chuck Hall.
The accident caused U.S. 23 to be closed for several hours, as accident re-constructionists investigated the accident. The accident remains under investigation by KSP Trooper Bryan Layne.
A former professional boxer best known for victories over Olympian “Sugar” Ray Seals and former middleweight champion Emile Griffith, Pennington was the owner and operator of Mayfield’s Boxing Gym, in Pikeville.During his boxing career, he compiled a 48-16 record and trained alongside Muhammad Ali.
Pennington was also a retired building contractor and a member of the Church of God M.P.G. of T.
Funeral services for Pennington will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, at J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel, in Pikeville. Burial will follow in Johnson Memorial Park.
