Snowstorms and treacherous road conditions set the scene for two separate fatal car crashes in Floyd County over the weekend.

On Sunday, Billy L. Crider, 49, of Prestonsburg, and a passenger were traveling west on Route 194 near German Bridge, when his vehicle left the roadway, traveled over an embankment and came to rest on its roof. A flashing brake light and a set of snowy tracks going over the embankment were the only clues left for the operator of a passing salt truck, who noticed the wreck and contacted emergency officials. Emergency officials estimated that vehicle had wrecked at least an hour before it was found.

According to Kentucky State Police, Post 9 received a call from the State Highway Department in Allen advising of the single-vehicle accident a little after 9 a.m.

Crider was pronounced dead at the scene by Floyd County Coroner Greg Nelson. His passenger was transported to Highlands Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to Cabel Huntington Hospital.

A second accident occurred when a vehicle being driven by Gary Arnett, 56, of Martin, on Route 1428 between Martin and Allen, left the road violently and came to rest in a ditch line. According to witnesses at the scene, the vehicle was driving erratically and wrecked once near the mouth of Arkansas Creek, before continuing on along Route 1428 and wreck again a few miles down the road.

Arnett was pronounced dead at the scene by Nelson.

Floyd County Emergency and Rescue Squad, KSP, and Transtar Ambulance responded to the scenes of both accidents.
