The Strand Twin Theater, which had been slated to close in two weeks, may remain open, if a proposed deal to sell the theater goes through as expected.

PRESTONSBURG — The announced closure of the Strand Twin Theater may be averted, as a tentative buyer has stepped forward to rescue the cinema.

Owner-operator J.T. Absher said earlier this month that declining sales, as well as the upcoming industry-wide conversion to digital projector systems, had left the Strand without a viable way forward and that the theater would be closing Jan. 6. That closure, however, now may not happen.

The tentative buyer, who has asked not to be identified until the deal is final, plans to continue to keep the Strand open on an uninterrupted basis. If the deal goes through, the theater would remain open on weekends until March, then expand to seven days a week after March.

In addressing the challenge of digital conversion, the tentative buyer has already obtained one digital projector. Plans call for both screens to continue showing movies, with one showing digital movies and one showing 35 mm film.

The tentative buyer also has other plans to expand some of the offerings at the theater, including private rentals and live performances.

The deal to transfer the theater could be finished as early as later this week. The Floyd County Times will have full details of the deal, if and when it happens.
