PRESTONSBURG - Prestonsburg High School student-athlete Trey Stapleton and his current teammates battled both the heat and opposing teams throughout the weekend. Stapleton and the Ohio Panthers competed in a tournament held Thursday-Saturday in Valparaiso, Ind., along with other squads from Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois. During the tournament, Stapleton pitched a two-hitter and smacked a home run. The Panthers complied a 2-2-1 record.
Stapleton had a perfect game intact through five innings. The Prestonsburg hurler settled for a two-hitter. The Panthers prevailed 5-2 as Stapleton allowed no earned runs. Stapleton, providing a lift with his bat, also belted a home run and a double for the Ohio baseball team.
He caught two games and played third base in another during the tournament, which was played in its entirety in the Valparaiso area. The Panthers played one game at Valparaiso University.
Stapleton is set to pitch for the Ohio-based team on Thursday afternoon in Columbus in another tournament. He and the Panthers are scheduled to compete in a season-ending tournament in Cincinnati in two weeks.
