MARTIN – Host South Floyd broke into the win column in a big way Friday evening in a road game at the Piarist School. South Floyd posted a convincing win over Piarist, defeating the Lady Knights 84-45. The Lady Raiders won after dropping a season-opener to the Shelby Valley Lady Cats.
Five different South Floyd players reached double figures in the scoring category/ Kiana Hall paced South Floyd with a game-high 19 points. Kayla Hall and Ashley Castle followed with 17 points apiece for the Lady Raiders. One of Floyd County’s leading long-range shooters, Kayla Hall drained a trio of three-point field goals. Gabrielle Bailey and Chelsie Tuttle tossed in 10 points apiece for the Lady Raiders. Andrea Conn narrowly missed double figures for South Floyd, finishing with nine points. Branda Hamby scored two points and Kendy Newsome connected on a free throw for the visiting South Floyd team.
The Lady Raiders shot 40-percent (8-of-20) from behind the three-point line.
South Floyd (1-1) will host Betsy Layne (2-0) today at 6 p.m. in a key 58th District/Floyd County Conference contest. Betsy Layne owns wins over Allen Central and Magoffin County.
Shelby Valley 65, South Floyd 55: Visiting South Floyd dropped its season-opener on the road Thursday, Dec. 3. After outscoring South Floyd 22-15 in the opening quarter, Shelby Valley clung to a 34-33 lead at the intermission. The Lady Cats used a 16-7 run in the third quarter to turn back South Floyd.
Brooke Coleman scored a game-high 22 points for host Shelby Valley. Brittany Swindell netted 19 points and Lynn Tackett added 10 as the Lady Cats opened the season victorious.
Shelby Valley shot 66.7 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Lady Raiders 27-9 in the opener.
The Lady Cats finished 10-for-15 from the free throw line.
Kayla Hall led South Floyd with a team-high 20 points. Kiana Hall contributed 15 points and Ashley Castle added 13 for the Lady Raiders.
Andrea Conn netted three points while Garbielle Bailey and Chelsie Tuttle tossed in two apiece.
South Floyd connected on 8-of-25 three-point field goal attempts.
