Horror made a decent comeback this week, with two films and a television series hitting the shelves.
“Cabin in the Woods” — Joss Whedon (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) produced and co-wrote this excellent horror flick that pokes fun at the genre, while still coming up with some decent scares. The film follows five young adults who head out to the titular location (a horror staple). Meanwhile, two white-collar schnooks start another day at the office. How these stories dovetail is half the fun. Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”) stars.
“The Victim” — Indie horror is well represented by this yarn that follows two young women on a disastrous date with a pair of unhinged police officers. The evening goes badly when one of the young lawmen is killed and the enforcement guys decide to silence the only witness. The young lady escapes but runs smack dab into the creepy guy who lives alone in the woods. Will he stand between her and certain death, or hurry matters along? Well made by Michael Biehn (“The Terminator”) who directed and stars.
“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” — When a group of Brits take retirement in India, they find that the brochure lied in this comedy drama. The film deposits the well-to-do retirees in an impoverished slum, where they soon become attached to the locals and find that they may just be happy. A strong cast helps you overlook some of the schmaltz and includes Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and Maggie Smith.
“Supernatural: Season 7” — The Winchester boys continue their occult adventures in this well received season. Their main foes turn out to be Leviathans, which are demonic beings that have escaped from Purgatory. They turn out to be a solid match for the brothers, who are rocked by a tragedy that robs them of a series regular and trusted comrade in arms.
Next week brings the summer’s biggest hit with the release of “The Avengers.”
