PRESTONSBURG – Tomorrow afternoon, longtime Floyd Circuit Court Judge Danny P. Caudill will retire during a ceremony in his honor at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park’s May Lodge.

The Floyd County Bar Association will host the reception, which will be attended by Kentucky Supreme Court Justice John Minton.

Justice Minton will also take the opportunity while in Prestonsburg to meet with a judicial nominating committee formed to find someone to fill Caudill’s empty seat.

“They will put forward some nominees and then those names go to the governor and he will appoint someone to fill the judge’s position until the next election,” said Ryan Allison, president of Floyd County Bar Association.

Floyd County Commonwealth’s Attorney Brent Turner had considered moving to replace Caudill but decided against this a few weeks ago, telling supporters in a paid newspaper advertisement that he had more he could be doing in his current position.

Allison said there has been some discussion of Caudill finishing out the year in his current position, but nothing had been confirmed. He did say, however, that he felt if a nominee needed to be placed that it would be done quickly.

“We had a situation up here in Mt. Sterling where a judge retired and it took quite a long time,” Allison continued. “But here, Caudill announced his intentions awhile back, so this should be much quicker.”

The nominating committee is made up of local attorneys, both practicing such as one member, Clyde Johnson, and retired, such as member John Rosenberg.

The reception will take place at 4 p.m. at the May Lodge. The event is open to the public.
