WHEELWRIGHT – A man wanted in Ohio on charges of forging drug documents was taken into custody this past week in Wheelwright.

David Irvine, originally of Ohio but living most recently in the Wheelwright area, was arrested at the Wheelwright Cardinal Mart gas station after police learned of the outstanding warrants against him in Ohio.

Officers with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department, Lt. Gary Tackett and Sgt. Delmas Johnson, said the initial thing that led to the arrest was noticing Irvine’s vehicle had out-of-date registration plates.

The two approached Irvine after pulling him over at the gas station and later reported that he was also without a driver’s license, in addition to appearing as if he was under the influence.

Tackett said during questioning, Irvine admitted to having smoked marijuana earlier in the evening and also taking a pill.

The warrants were confirmed at the scene, Tackett said. Irvine was wanted on two counts of illegally processing drug documents, two counts of deception to obtain a dangerous drug and one count of possession of drugs.

Tackett said although Blackburn often asks his department’s officers and deputies to be observant of any individuals in the areas they patrol who are strangers and not familiar to them, Irvine was, in fact, already on their radar.

“We had suspected him (Irvine) for awhile, and people who have warrants from out of state do have a tendency to come here and hide from time to time,” Tackett said. “But most of the time they eventually end up doing something like this and this is the result.”

According to police, Irvine had been in Floyd County for approximately a year before his arrest this week.
