Marathon draws crowd for a good cause

PRESTONSBURG — The morning light was just breaking as the sound of multiple footsteps filled the air in downtown Prestonsburg.

That was the start of the first ever Patriot’s Day Faithrunners Marathon. The race featured a full marathon, a half marathon, a 10K run, a 10K walk, and a kids fun run.

At 7 a.m. Saturday morning, almost 100 runners lined up and took to the course.

In the men’s 10K run division, Arthur Fletcher took first place with at time of 42:22, Matthew Doyle was second with 52:25 and Doug Hyden was third at 52:37.

In the women’s 10K run division, Taylor Moak came in first with 54:42, Claren Hudspeth came in second at 54:57 and Becky Crum finished third at a time of 56:23.

In the men’s 10K walk category, John Finney came in first at 102:48, Jackson Latta was second at 104:48. Also of note, Jack’s dog, Max, finished the race with Jack.

In the women’s category, Angela Maggard came in first with 102:48 and Yvette Stephens was runner up with 104:45.

In the men’s half marathon division, Mathew Winters came in first with 97:26 and John Little came in runner up with a finishing time of 107:59. Greg Frasure came in at third with a time of 108:35.

In the women’s half marathon division, Sue Miller was first with a time of 111:55 and Amanda Salyer was runner up with a time of 163:10. In third place was Sarah Burke with a time of 168:45.

In the men’s full marathon division, Jeffrey Nolan came in first with a time of 214:57. Runner-up in the division was Denny Fugate at 219:42. Vladimir Costas came in third with a time of 223:10.

For the women in the full marathon division, Bethany VanHoose came in first with a time of 292:45. And in the runner-up position, there was a tie between Jamison Salyer and Jessica Conley with a shared time of 329:20.

Of note, Carol Westerman, age 71 of Louisville, came in third at 346:47.

Maranda Finney won the “Fastest Kid in town” contest and “That 70s Band” played to the delight of the crowd. Their sampling of 1970s music was a big hit with the crowd.

All funds raised from the event will go to the American Cancer Society for the research, prevention, and cure of colon cancer. A check presentation will be issued shortly.
