PRESTONSBURG — A Matewan, W.Va., group is hoping to capitalize on Kentucky’s renewed interest in “adventure tourism” by offering trips down the Big Sandy River in kayaks and canoes.

The Hatield-McCoy River Rats will be testing the waters, so to speak, over the next two weekends, when they will offer “float tours” from Prestonsburg to Paintsville and from Elkhorn City to Draffin.

Kathy McCoy, who owns Hatield-McCoy River Rats with her husband, Donald, says there are still plenty of spots available for all of the tours. She said those interested in taking part need to make reservations by calling the River Rats at (606) 427-1056 or (304) 426-4700.

For the Prestonsburg-to-Paintsville trip, participants will meet at the Paint Creek boat ramp in Paintsville and be transported to Combs Airport, where they will put in the water and float back to their vehicles.

For the other trip, participants will meet at the Elkhorn City beach, where they will get in the water and float to Draffin. After the trip, they will then be transported back to their vehicles.

Both trips will begin at 11 a.m. on Oct. 17 and Oct. 24. One- and two-seat boats can be rented for $65 per boat.

Local officials are hoping the tours grow into something bigger and draw more tourists to the area.

“We hope these guided tours will be a jump start for regular scheduled tours next year,” said Prestonsburg Tourism Director Fred James. “We are blessed with a wonderful scenic waterway and have every opportunity in the world to invite enthusiasts from other places to visit and enjoy.”

McCoy agreed, and she and her husband have been looking at sites in the area where they could open a local office for their business.
