There have been only two filings this past week for local races, one for state representative and the other for circuit judge.
Rep. Hubert Collins filed this week to run as the incumbent for the 97th District. His challenger, former basketball coach Bill Mike Runyon, filed more than a week ago.
The filing sets up a potential high-profile race for the November election, as Collins is a Democrat, while Runyon filed as a Republican. Each man would also need to defeat any challengers within their respective parties in the May primary.
“Through my work as chair of the Transportation Committee, I have been able to improve our roads and infrastructure,” Collins said in a press release yesterday. “As a member of the Education Committee, I have been able to keep our agenda focused on teacher pay, curriculum advances and school building improvements through the district.
Collins, who lives in Wittensville, is seeking his 11th term in the 97th Legislative District, which is made up of Floyd, Pike, Johnson and Martin counties.
Filing Monday morning in Frankfort was Judge Johnny Ray Harris for Floyd County Circuit Judge in the District 31, Division 1.
Harris was appointed last month to the post following the retirement of Danny P. Caudill.
