GLASGOW - Three local hunters took advantage of the chance to hunt sandhill cranes in late-December. Joe R. Bolton and the father-son duo of Blaine and Wesley DePoy took three of four cranes that were taken in Kentucky on Dec. 31 in Barren County.
The is Kentucky’s second sandhill crane season.
The latest sandhill crane season opened Dec. 15, 2012 and closes Jan. 13, 2013. The daily and season bag limit for each hunter is two birds. Hunters must telecheck their game the same day it is taken. The season will close earlier if hunters reach the quota limit of 400 birds.
Participating hunters must complete a post-season survey by Jan. 25 to remain eligible for the following season.
Kentucky’s season is statewide. However, sandhill cranes may not be hunted in the Beaver Creek, Skaggs Creek and Peters Creek embayments of Barren River Lake Wildlife Management Area.
According to federal fish and wildlife, 60,000 migrate through Kentucky.
