PIKEVILLE - Betsy Layne’s 15th Region All “A” Classic reign ended on Sunday. After edging 58th District/Floyd County Conference foe South Floyd in overtime in the opening round of the 15th Region All “A” Classic, Betsy Layne fell to Paintsville in the small-school regional basketball tournament’s quarterfinals. The Bobcats had captured back-to-back 15th Region All “A” Classic championships, winning the statewide title in 2011.
Betsy Layne 66, South Floyd 64: Betsy Layne dodged a bullet in the form of 58th District foe South Floyd in the opening round of the 15th Region All “A” Classic on Friday. The Bobcats managed to edge South Floyd 66-64 in overtime as the 15th Region All “A” Classic at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center.
Dylan Meade poured in a game-high 31 points and pulled down eight rebounds for Betsy Layne in the hard-fought win. Meade also claimed eight rebounds.
Peyton Case scored 14 points and Garran Newsome added 10 for the Bobcats.
Lako Daniels and Dylan Hamilton chipped in six points each for the Betsy Layne boys’ basketball team.
Hamilton led Betsy Layne on the boards, grabbing 11 rebounds. Also productive, Daniels secured nine rebounds of his own.
Betsy Layne shot 39.4 percent from the field, draining of 26 of 66 attempts. The Bobcats were seven-of-16 from 3-point range
Betsy Layne struggled at times from the foul line, finishing eight-for-17.
The Bobcats grabbed 35 total rebounds.
Betsy Layne had 17 assists opposed to only turn turnovers.
Defensively, Betsy Layne had 24 rebounds, 12 deflections, four blocks and one steal.
Austin Salisbury led South Floyd with 18 points. Austin Bailey scored 17 points and Michael Martin added 13 for the Raiders.
Finishing one shot short of double figures, Dakota Justice chipped in eight points for South Floyd in the overtime loss.
Paintsville 59, Betsy Layne 53: Senior guard Trevor Tiller scored a game-high 27 points to lead Paintsville to a 59-53 win over Betsy Layne in the quarterfinals of the 15th Region All “A” Classic on Sunday at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center.
Paintsville outscored Betsy Layne 34-27 in the second half.
Betsy Layne was eliminated from the tournament after outscoring Paintsville 15-10 in the first quarter and carrying a 26-25 lead into halftime. The Tigers played their best after intermission.
Matt Daniels added 11 points for the Tigers.
Paintsville was nine-of-12 from the free throw line on its way to posting the upset win.
Dylan Meade led Betsy Layne with 19 points. Dylan Hamilton followed, adding 14 points for the Bobcats.
Accompanying Meade and Hamilton in double figures, Peyton Case pushed in 11 points for the Bobcats.
Betsy Layne was held to 32.1 percent shooting (17-of-53) from the field. The Bobcats managed to connect on five of 16 3-point field goal attempts.
Betsy Layne was 14-of-19 from the free throw line, shooting 73.7 percent.
The Bobcats committed 18 turnovers and only dished out seven assists in the setback.
