Bobcats edge Pikeville, 58-56

PIKEVILLE - Following a week away from the court, Betsy Layne made a strong return on Tuesday night, edging host Pikeville 58-56 at T.W. Oliver Memorial Gymnasium.

Betsy Layne claimed its second straight win, moving to 4-1. Homestanding Pikeville slipped to 5-2 after suffering the loss.

Betsy Layne shot 46.2 percent, connecting on 24-of-52 field goal attempts.

The Bobcats shot 72.7 percent (eight-of-11) from 3-point range.

All four Betsy Layne scorers reached double figures.

Sophomore forward/center Lako Daniels led Betsy Layne with 19 points. Junior forward/center Dylan Hamilton recorded a double-double, scoring 14 points and claiming 14 rebounds.

Sophomore guard/forward Peyton Case pushed in 13 points for Betsy Layne, which needed only two 3-pointers to get past Pikeville. Dylan Meade, a junior guard, added 12 points for the Bobcats.

Betsy Layne battled back for the win after facing multiple double-digit deficits in the first two quarters.

Each 15th Region boys’ basketball team dominated a half. After outscoring Betsy Layne 18-7 in the first quarter, Pikeville led 40-24 at halftime.

Betsy Layne, however, owned the second half. The Bobcats outscored Pikeville 34-16 in the second half to secure the win.

As a team, Betsy Layne claimed 25 rebounds.

Betsy Layne turned in a solid defensive effort, forcing Pikeville into committing 15 turnovers. Nineteen of Betsy Layne’s 25 rebounds came on the defensive end and the Bobcats recorded 11 steals.

As part of its offensive showing, Betsy Layne dished out 13 assists in the road game.

Senior center Ray Kasongo, a transfer from East Ridge, paced Pikeville with 18 points. Freshman forward Steven Silvers joined Kasongo in double figures, finishing with 15 points.

Senior guard Ethan Rowe scored seven points and junior guard Jacob Hamilton added six for the Panthers.

Freshman guards Blaine May and Ryder Johnson rounded out the Pikeville scoring with five and three points, respectively.

Betsy Layne will host South Floyd tonight as the Raiders visit for a 58th District/Floyd County Conference game.
