Bobcats drop first game to KCC

HINDMAN – After opening the season 3-0, Betsy Layne visited preseason 14th Region favorite Knott County Central Tuesday night. Highly-touted Knott County Central, under the direction of veteran head coach Pete Fraley, packed a 2-0 record into the early-season game and wouldn’t be denied its third win. Betsy Layne outscored Knott County Central in the opening quarter but couldn’t remain out in front of the Patriots. Knott County Central dominated the second and third quarters, outscoring Betsy Layne 52-21 en route to a convincing 85-67 win.

Four different players scored a dozen or more points for visiting Knott County Central. Guards Tate Cox and Stuart Stamper paced Knott County Central offensively, scoring 19 points apiece. Logan Bartrum netted 16 points and Nason Roberts added 12 for the resurgent Knott County Central basketball program.

Betsy Layne was the better team in the opening quarter. The Bobcats eased out of the first quarter ahead 22-21. Betsy Layne, however, faltered in the two middle quarters. Knott County heated up in the second quarter, outscoring the Bobcats 21-11 en route to a 42-33 lead at the intermission. The Patriots extended their lead to a comfortable double-digit advantage in the third quarter, outscoring host Betsy Layne 31-10.

Ten different players provided scoring for Knott County Central. Braxton Ratliff scored seven points and Zack Davis chipped in five for the Patriots.

Betsy Layne played well late, doubling up Knott County Central 24-12 in the final quarter.

Junior guard/forward Nathan Martin led Betsy Layne with 19 points. Senior forward Jordan Newman and senior guard Bryce Adkins joined Martin in double figures for the Bobcats, scoring 16 and 14 points, respectively. Newman recorded a double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds in the setback.

Junior guard Derek Tackett and junior forward/center Casey Adkins chipped in six points apiece for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats shot 54.9 percent from the field.

Betsy Layne (3-1) will venture to Raider Arena tonight for a 58th District/Floyd County Conference matchup versus South Floyd. Tip-off for the Betsy Layne-South Floyd boys’ basketball game is set for 7:30 p.m.
