PRESTONSBURG - After facing yet another early two-touchdown deficit, Prestonsburg battled back to win Friday night. The Blackcats turned back Floyd County foe and Class 2A, District 8 rival Betsy Layne, doubling up the Bobcats 48-24 at Josh Francis Field inside Blackcat Stadium.
Prestonsburg registered its second straight win, improving to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in Class 2A, District 8.
Betsy Layne had a three-game winning streak snapped. The Bobcats slipped to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the district after absorbing the loss.
Prestonsburg outscored Betsy Layne 14-0 in the second quarter to lead 14-12 at halftime. The Blackcats moved ahead in the second period period and never trailed again.
Record-setting quarterback Jarredd Jarell led Prestonsburg. Jarrell, a sophomore, completed 14-of-17 passes for 281 yards and one touchdown.
Record-setting receiver Bryson Williams, a senior, hauled in four receptions for 122 yards and one touchdown.
Junior Grant Anderson had a team-high five receptions for 94 yards.
Jarrell also led Prestonsburg on the ground, rushing 18 times for 85 yards and three touchdowns.
Freshman Dalton Frasure rushed eight times for 66 yards and three touchdowns as Prestonsburg prevailed in the district game.
Anderson added 37 yards and one touchdown via five carries for the Bobcats.
As a team, Prestonsburg racked up 471 yards of total offense.
Adam Griffith led the Prestonsburg defense with a team-high 11 tackles. Cody Jarrell and Aaron Griffith added 10 tackles apiece for the Blackcats.
Seth Marcum and Kyle Wallace added nine tackles each for the Blackcats.
Betsy Layne managed 388 yards of total offense in the loss.
As a team, Betsy Layne racked up 290 total rushing yards.
Houston Hall led Betsy Layne on the ground, rushing 25 times for 144 yards.
Josh Salisbury rushed 19 times for 140 yards and one touchdown.
Betsy Layne junior quarterback Dylan Hamilton rushed once for a 1-yard touchdown.
Hamilton completed nine-of-20 passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns.
Dustin Rogers led Betsy Layne with three catches for 44 yards and one touchdown. Salisbury and Blake Spencer followed with two catches apiece.
Spencer grabbed Hamilton’s other scoring pass.
Defensively, Spencer led Betsy Layne with 10 tackles. Zach Tackett totaled eight tackles and Houston Hall added seven stops for the Bobcats,
Blake Boudle, Charles Daniel, Tony Dirico and Salisbury supplied five tackles each for Betsy Layne in the district matchup.
Prestonsburg will visit Hazard on Friday, Sept. 28. In another area game scheduled for the same day, Betsy Layne will visit Paintsville.
