Following a series of devastating closures, shutdowns and layoffs in the coal industry people are desperately seeking answers and options and one group is trying to answer that call.

East Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program Inc. (EKCEP) will be hosting a series of benefits fairs which are designed to specifically target miners and their families.

According to Bridget Back, Research and Program Effectiveness Manager with EKCEP, three benefits fairs will be held around the region beginning Thursday, July 26, in Hazard. A second event will be held August 15, in Harlan county, and the third and final event will be held in Prestonsburg, at the Mountain Arts Center, August 28.

While recent disenfranchised miners are the target audience of the events, says Back, they are open to any and all in the public.

“I believe these will be a huge success,” said Back adding that they are trying to promote the events so that everyone who might benefit is aware.

Coal jobs have been the recipient of several tough breaks this year when in June Arch Coal became the second major coal operation to reduce its workforce by laying off more than 600 employees in the area. Two weeks ago, a national mining company, Patriot Coal, filed chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Earlier this year Alpha Natural Resources announced it would eliminate 436 jobs in Kentucky, while giving 286 of those workers the opportunity to relocate to open positions in Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia.
