PRESTONSBURG - As Highlands Regional Medical Center commemorates 40 years of service and dedication to the community, so does one of Highlands Auxiliary’s founding members, Garnett Fairchild. This month, Fairchild celebrates her 40th anniversary as a devoted volunteer.
Fairchild, a lifelong Prestonsburg resident, enjoyed supporting her community through volunteer work beginning in 1973, when there were just two HRMC auxiliary members. Today, Fairchild’s efforts have resulted in a volunteer organization with over 65 members. The auxiliary supports HRMC in numerous ways, including making the largest contribution towards HRMC’s emergency room renovation in 2008.
Over the years, Fairchild’s duties have stretched far beyond traditional volunteer tasks. Just a year after Fairchild began volunteering, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her cancer was later completely removed through surgery and she used that experience to help others. Fairchild visited breast cancer patients within the hospital and counseled them on the healing process. She says it was incredibly rewarding to see a patient’s eyes light up when they heard her story of survival.
“The Lord has blessed me in so many ways and he is keeping me here at Highlands to help people,” Fairchild said.
Before beginning her work at Highlands, Fairchild worked as beautician, owning and operating her own salon. In her free time, she taught flowering arranging, and still loves to plant flowers and garden. Fairchild is also a gifted vocalist, even performing with the Lexington Philharmonic.
