PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville men’s soccer team was picked to finish eighth according to a preseason poll of the Mid-South Conference coaches, league officials announced on Friday.
UPIKE, which will be led by first-year head coach Adam Johnson, finished 5-11-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the MSC last season. The wins on the road against St. Catharine and Georgetown were the first conference wins in program history.
Johnson will have plenty to replace, however, after the departure of All-MSC selections Cooper Gaypia and Dean Johnson, who accounted for 24 of the team’s 35 goals last season.
Lindsey Wilson is the favorite to capture the MSC Championship, collecting six of the eight first-place votes for 48 points in the poll. The Blue Raiders went 17-4-2 last season, won their 11th MSC Regular-Season title and advanced to the semifinals of the NAIA National Championship.
Next in line is Campbellsville with 44 points and the other two first-place nods, followed by Cumberland (Tenn.) to round out the top three with 35. Cumberlands is fourth (33), Shawnee State (Ohio) fifth (22), Georgetown sixth (18) and St. Catharine seventh with 14 points.
UPIKE picked up 10 voting points to round out the list. The Bears open the 2014 season on Aug. 23 at Berea.
