BUCKLEYS CREEK - After one season as an assistant coach on the Betsy Layne boys’ basketball bench, Derrick Newsome is set to guide another high school hoops program as its head coach. Newsome has been named the new head coach of the Pike County Central girls’ basketball team.


Two years ago, Newsome guided the Allen Central Lady Rebels to a 58th District championship and an appearance in the semifinals of the 15th Region Tournament.


Newsome, who replaces Wesley Hatcher as head coach of the Lady Hawks, inherits a Pike Central girls’ basketball team compiled an 8-21 overall record in the 2013-14 season. The Lady Hawks finished runner-up to Belfry in the 60th District and fell to eventual champion Shelby Valley in the opening round of the 15th Region Tournament.


In another Pike Central coaching move, Keith May has been tabbed to guide the school’s boys’ basketball team as its next head coach.


The Pike Central football program also has a new head coach as Shawn Thacker is poised to guide the Hawks on the gridiron.
