PIKEVILLE – University of Pikeville head volleyball coach Shannon Gassman released the team’s 2014 schedule on Thursday which includes 16 matches at home inside UPIKE Gymnasium.
The Bears were much improved in 2013, going from just six wins the year before and an 0-14 mark in league play to a 14-21 overall record and 3-15 mark against Mid-South Conference teams.
UPIKE, which returns 10 student-athletes from last year’s squad, opens the season on Aug. 26 with a trip to West Virginia Tech in Montgomery, W. Va. Its home opener will be four days later against Midway (Ky.) at Noon ET on Aug. 30.
Play picks up on Sept. 4 with the start of conference play when the Bears travel to Lebanon, Tenn., to face Cumberland. Fans in Pikeville can watch UPIKE take on an MSC opponent on Sept. 11 when Georgetown (Ky.) comes to UPIKE Gym at 7 p.m.
Georgetown is one of two opponents on the Bears’ schedule that advanced to the NAIA National Championship last season. Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) is the other as it wrapped up the season ranked 16th in the NAIA Top-25 Poll and Georgetown claimed the No. 10 spot.
At the end of regular-season play, the Mid-South Conference Championship is scheduled for Nov. 14-16 in Louisville, Ky., followed by the NAIA National Championship on Dec. 2-6 in Sioux City, Iowa.
