INEZ - Allen Central accounted for eight hits but couldn’t manufacture enough runs to knock off frontrunner Johnson Central in the opening round of the 15th Region Baseball Tournament at Sheldon Clark earlier in the week. In a battle of former 15th Region baseball champions, Johnson Central pulled away to beat the Rebels 8-1 at Cardinal Park on Monday.

Johnson Central eighth-grade pitcher Tate Meade earned the win. Strong from start to finish, Meade registered eight strikeouts.

Pitching out of a relief role, senior Quade Ward worked the final two innings for the Golden Eagles.

Allen Central pitcher Junior Handshoe suffered the loss.

The Rebels owned a brief lead. Allen Central scored first, pushing across one run in the top half of the first inning. The Rebels, however, allowed Johnson Central to score five runs in the bottom half of the initial frame.

Johnson Central maintained the 5-1 lead through five and a half innings. The Golden Eagles added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Each team collected eight hits.

Jordan Young led Johnson Central with two hits. Zach Slone, Bo Robbins and Alex Castle had one RBI apiece for the Golden Eagles.

At the plate, Handshoe led Allen Central with three hits.

The Rebels committed four errors in the season-ending loss.

In other opening round games in the 15th Region Baseball Tournament it was East Ridge 7, Pike County Central 1; Belfry 7, Prestonsburg 1 and Lawrence County 2, Pikeville 0.
