PRESTONSBURG - The Betsy Layne softball program is back on top in the 58th District. Betsy Layne pulled out a hard-fought victory over Prestonsburg on Thursday, defeating the Lady Blackcats 10-8 in the 58th District championship game at StoneCrest.


Betsy Layne pitcher Brandy Morrow earned the win.


Prestonsburg pitcher Haley Howell suffered the loss.


Offensively for Betsy Layne, sophomore Emily Kidd belted two home runs. Kidd connected on a three-run inside-the-park home and crushed a three-run home run over the center field fence.


Junior Chloe Johnson smacked a three-run home run over the right-center field fence and senior Kennedy Bias contributed an RBI double.


Both Betsy Layne and Prestonsburg advanced to the 15th Region Softball Tournament at Sheldon Clark in Inez.


Joining Betsy Layne and Prestonsburg in the field for this year’s 15th Region Softball Tournament are Belfry, Pikeville, Johnson Central, Pike County Central, East Ridge and Paintsville.


Defending 15th Region champion Magoffin County was eliminated in the opening round of the 57th District Tournament at Painstville.
