PRESTONSBURG - Betsy Layne shook a slow start to defeat defending champion South Floyd 8-5 in the 58th District Softball Tournament at StoneCrest on Monday night.
Betsy Layne pitcher Brandy Morrow earned the win. Settling down after allowing South Floyd to score three times during its first two plate appearances, Marrow held the Lady Raiders to two runs over the last five innings.
South Floyd pitcher Brittany Dawson suffered the loss.
The Lady Raiders scored two runs in the top half of the first inning and led 3-1 at the conclusion of the second stanza.
Getting going offensively, Betsy Layne plated two runs in the top half of the third inning.
The Ladycats used another two-run outburst in the fourth inning to move ahead 5-3.
After allowing South Floyd to pull within one run in the top half of the sixth inning, Betsy Layne added three more runs in the bottom of the frame.
At the plate for the Ladycats, Kennedy Bias reached base four times and scored three runs.
Chloe Johnson and Alex Sisco each had two singles for Betsy Layne in the victory.
Leadoff batter Brooke Potter paced South Floyd with three hits, one of which was a double.
Dawson, helping her pitching cause at the plate, delivered two singles for the Lady Raiders.
With the win, Betsy Layne evened its record to 11-11.
After suffering the season-ending loss, South Floyd exited the 2014 campaign with a 2-23 overall record.
Betsy Layne was facing Prestonsburg in the 58th District Softball Tournament championship game on Thursday night. Results from the championship game were unavailable at press time.
