PRESTONSBURG - Allen Central prevailed in the opening round of the 58th District Baseball Tournament, defeating Betsy Layne 8-1.


With the win, Allen Central improved to 23-10 and advanced to the 58th District championship game.


At press time, Allen Central was awaiting the winner of the Prestonsburg-South Floyd game.


Results from the Prestonsburg-South Floyd game were unavailable at press time.


Following the loss, Betsy Layne ended its season 11-18.


First pitch for the district title tilt is set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.


In the win over Betsy Layne, Allen Central owned a slim 6-5 advantage in the hits column.


Betsy Layne struck first, scoring one run in the top half of the first inning. But the Bobcats couldn’t maintain a lead.


Allen Central answered, plating one run in the bottom half of the first inning.


The two teams remained tied 1-1 until the bottom half of the fifth inning when Allen Central scored three runs to move ahead 4-1.


Stretching its lead out over Floyd County foe Betsy Layne, Allen Central added four more runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning.


Allen Central pitcher Dillon Lawson pitcher four innings and earned the win. Lawson recorded three strikeouts.


Turning in a solid performance, Tanner Hamilton threw two innings, registering six strikeouts.


On the mound for Betsy Layne, Houston Hall pitched four innings and fanned four batters. Hall, however, took the loss.


At the plate for Allen Central, Junior Handshoe delivered three hits.


Dustin Johnson drove in three runs for the Rebels.


Aiding the Allen Central attack, Trey Aldrich added two hits and two RBIs.


Jonathan Brock paced Betsy Layne with three hits.


Each team committed an error in the district tournament matchup.
