PRESTONSBURG - The Prestonsburg Lady Blackcats returned to the win column on Thursday (April 17), defeating Phelps 9-1.
Prestonsburg senior pitcher Haley Howell recorded 10 strikeouts and earned the win. Howell sat the heart of the Phelps batting order down with back-to-back-to-back strikeouts in the fourth inning.
Prestonsburg returned to the win column after suffering a three-run loss to another Pike County foe - Pike County Central - one night earlier.
The Blackcats moved out in front early, scoring four runs in the top half of the first inning.
Following a scoreless second at-bat, Prestonsburg scored twice in the third inning.
The Lady Blackcats, under the direction of Coach Jamie Howell, added three more runs in the fourth inning to lead 9-0.
Phelps pushed across its lone run in the fifth inning.
Offensively for Prestonsburg, Elizabeth Campbell scored three runs. Kate Rose followed, delivering two runs for the Lady Blackcats.
Howell, Kierra Shelton, Allyson DeRossett and Jenna Little scored one run apiece for Prestonsburg in the victory.
Shelton, Little and Hannah Little led the Prestonsburg offensive attack with two hits apiece.
Hannah Little doubled in the three-run fourth inning.
Rose and Campbell each had one hit in Prestonsburg’s victory.
The Lady Blackcats dealt Phelps its second straight loss.
Phelps pitcher Hannah Layne suffered the loss.
The Prestonsburg and Phelps softball teams are not slated to meet again this season.
