PIKEVILLE – A four-game Mid-South Conference winning streak came to an end on Saturday as the University of Pikeville softball team lost to Georgetown (Ky.) 11-2 in six innings and 3-1 at Paul Butcher Field.
The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning and five more in the sixth to end game one early before overcoming a 1-0 deficit in the seventh inning of game two with a three-run home run from pinch hitter Kelsey Krueger.
UPIKE’s Lauren Barnes (2-9) took the loss in game one after giving up six runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and five walks in five innings. Sydney Morris (7-10) struck out nine batters and allowed seven hits in game two before Krueger lifted all three of the Tigers’ runs with her shot to left field in the final inning.
Kayla Williams (8-4) and Jessica Claxton (10-3) picked up the wins in the circle for Georgetown with two complete-game performances. Right fielder Sandy Young shined in the opener with three hits for three RBIs and a run scored, while Krueger and shortstop Chelsea Osborn going 2-for-2 paced Georgetown in the finale.
Barnes walked two batters to open the first game before giving up a single to load the bases, from there Young hit a single to centerfield that scored the first two runs. An error in the infield loaded the bases again and the next batter was walked to bring in another run.
Looking to gain back some momentum for UPIKE, shortstop Taylor Weeks roped a triple in the bottom of the inning and came around to score as the throw to third base was wild.
While Georgetown went on to add a run in the second inning and seven more in the last two frames, the Bears’ only other run came on first baseman Courtney Morgan’s leadoff homer in the fourth inning.
Four and a half innings went by before a run was scored in game two and this time it was Pikeville taking the lead. Centerfielder Brandi Jo Howard led off the fifth with a single, moved to third on a single by Weeks and scored the go-ahead run on Morgan’s hit to right field.
It looked like the Tigers were roaring back with a leadoff double in the next inning, but Morris got two fly outs and a strikeout to end the threat. It was three up, three down for UPIKE in the bottom of the inning before Krueger hit her home run with one out. Osborn had singled and pinch hitter Alexis Bahl drew a walk to set up the three-run hit.
