ASHLAND - Ashland earned a win in its home opener on Friday, defeating defending 15th Region champion Prestonsburg 6-4 at Alumni Field.
Through its first 10 games in the 2014 season, Ashland was 6-4.
After falling short in the road game, reigning 15th Region champion Prestonsburg dropped to 7-5.
Ashland pitcher Robert Griffith earned the win. Griffith worked six innings, registering seven strikeouts.
Prestonsburg pitcher Reece Isom absorbed the loss. Isom allowed five runs in three innings.
Ashland won despite being outhit 9-5.
Two big innings helped to catapult Ashland to the win. The Tomcats plated three runs in the bottom half of the first inning and scored two other times during their third plate appearance.
Senior Evan Cox, hitting out of the number nine spot in the Ashland batting order, finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs batted in.
Casey Clark contributed an RBI single for the Tomcats in the victory.
Encountering more than one hardship in the field, Prestonsburg committed three errors.
Leading Prestonsburg at the plate, Hunter Brown went 2-for-3 with two doubles and Aaron Foley finished 2-for-2.
Prestonsburg is scheduled to host Ashland on May 17.
