STAFFORDSVILLE - The Tug Valley Bass Anglers fishing club held its first tournament of the 2014 season on Paintsville Lake on Sunday. There was a solid turnout with 42 anglers competing in the event. In the end, veteran angler Kevin Runyon finished first.

Paintsville Lake was at normal pool. The water doesn’t get drawn down in winter at Paintsville Lake like other Eastern Kentucky lakes. The water was stained on the entire lake with a temperature of 45 degrees on the lower end and 48-50 degrees on the upper end.

Weather for the tournament was the best club fishermen have had in several years. The day started out with a temperature of 40 degrees and topped out at about 45 with mostly cloudy skies and moderate winds.

The fish actually bit frequently for fishermen who were in the right area throwing the right bait. The fish were in early prespawn type locations and the catchable fish were closer to the bank relating to laydowns and the outside grass line that runs down most banks on Paintsville Lake.

The main pattern for the tournament was to fish crankbaits and plastic crawfish imitations on laydowns and the outside edge of the grass lines. The active fish were fairly shallow, six feet or less.

The top finishers for the tournament were as follows: 1st - Kevin Runyon (5 fish), 8.42 lbs.; 2nd - Johnny Webb (5 fish), 7.07 lbs.; 3rd - MO (5 fish), 5.51 lbs.; 4th - Chuck Newman 1 fish), 5.36 lbs.; 5th - Chris Taylor (5 fish), 4.82 lbs.; 6th - Lynn Fields (5 fish), 4.02 lbs.; 7th - Michael Salyer (5 fish), 3.31 lbs.; 8th - Joe Collins (5 fish), 2.96 lbs.; 9th - Don Taylor (2 fish), 2.89 lbs.; 10th - Andy Maynard, (5 fish), 2.80 lbs..
