PRESTONSBURG - Allen Central took an early lead in the 58th District baseball race over the weekend, defeating defending champion Prestonsburg 8-2 at StoneCrest Sportspark.
The Rebels broke a two-game losing skid, improving to 3-2 after posting the win.
Following the loss, Prestonsburg fell to 2-2.
Former champions, Allen Central and Prestonsburg both competed in last year’s 15th Region Baseball Tournament at Belfry.
Allen Central won behind strong pitching and a balanced offensive effort.
The Rebels, under the direction of head coach Chad Hall, never trailed. Allen Central plated three runs in the top half of the third inning to take an early 3-0 lead and never had to play from behind.
The Rebels, who pushed across eight runs on 13 hits, turned in an error-free performance in the field.
Allen Central pitcher Tyler Hamilton pitched five innings and earned the win. Hamilton registered five strikeouts against the Prestonsburg lineup. Another accomplished Allen Central pitcher, Dylan Lawson, pitched out of a relief role.
Dustin Johnson led the Allen Central offensive effort with four hits. Hamilton connected for three hits and Gage Parsons added two hits for the Rebels.
Junior Handshoe delivered three RBIs for Allen Central in the key district win.
Prestonsburg scored one run in two separate innings. The Blackcats got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the fourth inning after falling behind 4-0.
Defending 15th Region champion Prestonsburg committed three errors.
Prestonsburg pitcher Jarrin Hall suffered the loss. Hall registered five strikeouts and teammate teammate Nick Rowe fanned two.
John Cooksey paced Prestonsburg with two RBIs.
