PIKEVILLE - No. 15 Lindsey Wilson used a two-out double and single to drive in three runs in the fifth inning and hold on for a 5-3 win against the University of Pikeville baseball team on Friday in a Mid-South Conference game at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
In a game where neither team scored until the fourth inning, solid starting pitching performances were the highlight. England Smith improved to 4-2 with the complete-game win, scattering six hits for three runs with four strikeouts. Zak Sutherland took the loss (3-2) after giving up five runs on nine hits in eight innings of work on the mound.
Third baseman Erik Manning had the best day at the plate for Pikeville, going 1-for-2 with an RBI, sacrifice fly and drawing a walk. Outfielder Zach Nothwehr also drove in a run, was walked and scored a run.
After the three scoreless frames, both the Bears and Blue Raiders put up single runs in the fourth inning. After two walks, designated hitter Nick Offman hit an RBI single to put Lindsey Wilson ahead, then UPIKE answered on a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield by Manning.
The fifth inning was when the Blue Raiders seized control of the game. After a single from centerfielder Jeandro Andino in which he stole second, the Blue Raiders registered two straight fly outs. But with two outs, outfielder Alex Bautista ripped a two-run double and Hoffman hit another RBI single to make it a 4-1 game.
Down 5-1 in the eighth inning, Pikeville took advantage of a an RBI single from pinch hitter Keenan Freitag and a Blue Raider error to bring outfielder Connor Osborne home from third after a wild throw.
The rally ended there though as the Bears hit into a ground out and were shutout in the ninth to give Lindsey Wilson the win.
