LEXINGTON - Following a steal from teammate Braxton Blair, Dalton Adkins scored on a layup with 4.6 seconds remaining to lift back-to-back-to-back 15th Region champion Johnson Central to a 58-56 win over 10th Region champ Campbell County on Wednesday night in the first round of the Boys’ Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.
Johnson Central won its 14th straight game and advanced to meet 11th Region champion Scott County in the State Tournament’s Elite 8. In another opening round game, Scott County defeated Fleming County 77-66.
The Golden Eagles (26-6) battled back from a 12-point first-half deficit.
Campbell County (21-9) had a chance to tie or win the game but couldn’t get a shot on the game’s final possession.
Kyle Gullett paced the Golden Eagles with 22 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double.
Truman Salyer followed, finishing with 15 points for the Golden Eagles.
Defensively, Johnson Central had 11 blocks.
Marshall University signee Shane Hall led Johnson Central in blocks, rejecting five shots for the Golden Eagles.
Just missing double figures, Hall scored nine points for Johnson Central.
The Golden Eagles played from behind throughout the first half. Campbell County outscored the Golden Eagles 14-11 in the first quarter and after owning a 12-point lead in the second period, led 31-26 at halftime.
Battling back, Johnson Central outscored Campbell County 20-13 in the third quarter.
Corey Holbrook paced Campbell County with 18 points.
Deandre Jackson and Matt Wilson followed, adding 16 points apiece for the Camels.
Wilson registered a double-double, pulling down 21 rebounds for Campbell County in the season-ending loss.
Tip-off for the Johnson Central-Scott County game is set for 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
