MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Neither game was typical on Wednesday as the University of Pikeville softball team beat Lasell (Mass.) 9-1 in five innings and lost to Spalding (Ky.) 4-3 in eight innings to wrap up play at the Fastpitch Dreams Myrtle Beach Tournament with a split.

The Bears (4-13) now head home for a pair of Mid-South Conference doubleheaders, hosting Rio Grande (Ohio) at 3 p.m. on Friday and Shawnee State (Ohio) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Utility player Courtney Morgan paced the Bears on Wednesday with three hits combined that included three doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored. Third baseman Hollie Hinkle impressed against Lasell, going 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, while centerfielder Brandi Jo Howard went 1-for-3 with a double, stolen base, walk and two runs in the loss to Spalding.

Sydney Morris (1-6) picked up her first win of the season in the circle after going all five inning while allowing just one run on three hits with four stikeouts. Miranda Owens went all eight innings in the loss, dropping to 2-2 overall while scattering eight hits for four runs with six strikeouts.

After a scoreless first inning, UPIKE went wild in the second inning against Lasell, putting up seven runs on six hits including a two-run double by Morgan. Lasell fought back with a single run in the third, but it was all the scoring it could come up with. Pikeville ended the game early with first baseman Sarah Kinney roping an RBI single to make it an eight-run lead through five innings.

Spalding took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning of the final game of the day, a lead it kept until the Bears tied the score on another double from Morgan that brought home Howard and shortstop Taylor Weeks in the third inning.

Four scoreless frames followed until Spalding put two more runs on the board in the top of the eighth inning. That left UPIKE with one more chance at the plate to come back for a second time.

With Howard on second using the international tie-breaker, she moved to third on a groundout by Weeks and scored on a sacrifice fly by Eady Beth Connally. But the Bears were still down a run with two outs and Morgan grounded out in the next at-bat to bring the game to a close.
