MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – After the games on day one of its spring-break trip got canceled, the University of Pikeville softball team came back in style, beating St. Joseph (Conn.) 11-7 and New Rochelle (N.Y.) 28-1, while also losing to Clarion (Pa.) 5-4 on Tuesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Myrtle Beach Tournament.

It’s hard to recap a 28-1 win, simply everything went right for UPIKE (3-12) and nearly everything went wrong for the Blue Angels (0-3). New Rochelle committed 16 errors as the Bears racked up the runs on 19 hits, including seven doubles.

In a game with lots of gaudy stats, catcher Eady Beth Connally led the way going 4-for-6 with five RBIs, three doubles, a stolen base and five runs scored. Pitcher Miranda Owens (2-1) grabbed the win, allowing a run on two hits with five strikeouts.

The Bears led 8-1 after two innings were complete, but broke loose with a 12-run third frame to take a dominant 20-1 advantage.

In the 11-7 win against St. Joseph, the game played out much differently. Pikeville jumped out to an 11-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, using a five-run sixth and four-run seventh. But before the action could come to a close, the Blue Jays came alive for seven runs in their half of the seven inning with five singles and a double.

Eventually Lauren Barnes (1-4) got the final out to stop the comeback attempt when catcher Heather Hasty threw out a runner advancing to second after a play at home.

In the only loss of the day, UPIKE went through a back-and-forth game with Clarion that reached eight innings before the Golden Eagles tallied a game-winning double.

The Bears started with a 1-0 lead after the first inning when shortstop Taylor Weeks sprinted home on a passed ball. It was a brief advantage as Clarion pushed across three runs the next inning, building a 3-1 lead that lasted until the fourth inning.

Pikeville tied the game in the fourth on an RBI groundout from left fielder Sara Browning and RBI single by Connally. The teams traded runs over the next two innings to keep the score tied until Jordyn Syfert roped a double to left field in the eighth inning to end it.
