ALLEN - High school baseball returned to Floyd County on Friday. Betsy Layne, under the direction of head coach Bryan Dixon, won its season-opener, defeating 14th Region opponentCordia 12-2 in five innings.

Senior Houston Hall was the winning pitcher. Hall registered five strikeouts in four innings. The Betsy Layne hurler threw 11 first pitch strikes.

After giving up one run in the top half of the first inning, Betsy Layne pushed across three runs in the home half of the initial stanza.

Dominant Betsy Layne plated at least one run in each inning. The Bobcats led 8-2 at the end of the fourth inning and added four runs in the bottom half of the fifth frame to force the game to end early via the KHSAA 10-Run Mercy Rule.

Betsy Layne made the most of its offensive opportunities. The Bobcats scored plated 12 runs on seven hits.

Hall and fellow senior Austin Gillespie led Betsy Layne with two hits apiece. Along with Hall, senior Dylan Hamilton and junior Peyton Case each had two RBI for the Bobcats.

Defensively, Betsy Layne only committed one error.

Cordia committed five errors in the loss.

Betsy Layne is scheduled to visit Belfry on Thursday. Betsy Layne is 3-1 through its first four games.
